Hannah Song is a LA native and graduated from Cal in 2015. At Cal, Hannah double majored in Economics and Rhetoric. Hannah currently works in San Francisco as an analyst at Analysis Group. Keep reading to learn more about Hannah’s experiences in SFAC and passion for economic research!
What positions you hold in SFAC? What did you enjoy most about your time in SFAC?
I was part of SFAC for two semesters, one of which I spent on the Marketing Committee. I think SFAC is unique in that not everyone had the same career aspirations, but the club itself provided broad enough training infrastructure that allowed us to learn skills that were useful in most jobs, like Excel. It’s also a tight knit group of people that provided a supportive network.
Do you have any advice for undergrads or SFAC members?
I personally benefitted from studying both Rhetoric and Economics at Cal. Many don’t consider these logical complements, but the interdisciplinary aspect allowed me new perspectives in both fields. Rhetoric especially is an important framework of learning and understanding, a frame I felt really enhanced my understanding of Economics. I would encourage others to not be tied so tightly to a major that will service the job search, but take advantage of the variety of the classes available at Cal, not only in other departments but also the Decals and PE classes. The Star Wars and Kanye West Decals and Judo may not have contributed directly to my earning potential, but they challenged and taught me in other important ways.
What do you do as an economic analyst at Analysis Group?
Analysis Group provides economic consulting for law firms, corporations and government agencies. Essentially, we answer economic questions for institutions (most often, law firms) when they don’t have the tools or resources to answer the questions themselves. We work on a wide variety of cases where economic questions are at stake, including antitrust, contracts, securities fraud, and even those where economic questions aren’t so obvious, like NFL’s Deflategate case. Day to day, I do a lot of data analysis using programs like SAS, SQL, R and Stata. However, my work is also very team driven, and we work together often as well. It’s a great combination of both qualitative and quantitative skills.
How did you first discover that you had a passion for economic research?
When I first came to Cal, I knew that I was interested in law, but also wanted to incorporate quantitative analysis where I could. I realized that Economics and econometric analysis was a primary tool by which you can combine those interests. When you look at policy measures, you realize how important it is that they be guided by something more than political theory and be grounded in quantified proof. You also realize how easy it is to exaggerate or mess up data, and how important it is that there are people who are doing it correctly. This became especially clear when I interned with the Department of State’s Office of the Chief Economist the summer after my sophomore year. They conduct their own large-scale, global economic research which ultimately informs a lot of their international policy. This internship helped me get on the path of economic research, and ultimately to the field of economic consulting.
Do you have any advice for people who might be interested in economic consulting?
I would say to make sure that you’re genuinely interested in economic research, and to demonstrate that on your application and resume. I understand that this isn’t easy, especially at Cal, where the URAP program is competitive and often might not align exactly with your interests. However, it is possible to reach out to professors who are in your field of interest (in my case, it was the law professors writing papers in financial economics) and ask them if they need research assistants. As an economic consultant, what you’re doing most of the time is supporting and helping conduct economic research that will ultimately serve as proof in a litigation setting, so it’s important to get as much experience as you can.
And lastly, what is the best part about working life, or life after college in general?
It’s great being able to do the work that I feel I’ve been training for in college. That is to say, it’s nice feel as if I am where I’m supposed to be. I’ve always wanted to do work that is both interesting and important, and I think Analysis Group is a great place to do that.
